The works will see 234 extra car spaces, new natural turf soccer and cricket pitches, new light poles and an electronic scoreboard built at the site as part of an ongoing master plan.

The revamp will also include an Olympic memorial garden to pay homage to the park’s history as the training venue for the 1956 Olympic Games.

The works will see 17 trees removed but a further 60 planted.

Banyule Mayor Alison Champion said she was excited that the redevelopment would allow for more recreational opportunities for the general community.

“The redevelopment of this site provides a wonderful opportunity to continue the legacy of the Olympic Games, its heritage and connection to the community,” Ms Champion said.

The community was consulted throughout 2016 and the council adopted the Olympic Park Master Plan on March 14, 2017.

The proposal put forward to council on February 3 outlined the second stage of development.

The proposal received only one objection but this was then withdrawn following community discussions.

Stage one works are already underway, with resurfacing of the main southern pitch set to finish in March.

Stage 2 construction will start in the 2020/21 financial year.
