A man bit off more than he could chew during an early morning robbery of a Whitehorse school.
The burglar managed to flee the Blackburn North school before police could catch up with him, but he was tracked by the dog squad shortly after, when he was found hiding in a nearby backyard.
The 26-year-old Wandin North man broke into portable buildings at Old Orchard Primary School on Koonung Rd just before 5am yesterday, according to Sergeant Paul Egan.
He got away with six laptops before Box Hill and Doncaster police arrived at the school, responding to its alarm system.
Sgt Egan said officers quickly called in the dog squad, who led them to Lobelia Crt, Blackburn, about 750m from the school.

Officers spotted the man in someone’s front yard before he threw the laptops onto the ground and ran into another property.
Sgt Egan said the offender was then found hiding behind a shed, where he was arrested.
“The dog persuaded him to come out,” he said.
The man was taken to Box Hill police station and charged with burglary.
He fronted a magistrates’ court today.
