Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club is hitting the mark by campaigning to reduce road fatalities as part of TAC’s Towards Zero initiative.
In collaboration with AFL Victoria, Towards Zero encourages community netball and football clubs to promote the message and help head towards a safer road system, with $300,000 up for grabs.
Old Ivanhoe Grammarians vice president Steve King said too many Aussies were killing themselves on the road.
“Enough is enough, I see it every day of the week, get off your phones and don’t drink and drive,” Mr King said.
“The message needs to get out and get through to people, even if we save just one life.”
The club will participate in the Towards Zero Round match against Old Mentonians, with captain Michael Mitris wearing a jumper with the number zero on the back.
“It’s something that really hits home and the boys can get around, it’s a really beneficial cause,” Mitris said.
The club will show its support for the cause by having the electronic scoreboard read messages such as ‘don’t text and drive’ and ‘drinking and driving are better apart’ and a banner proclaiming Towards Zero.
Teams can be awarded up to $10,000 for their commitment to promoting the Towards Zero message.
Team manager Craig Flenley said dangerous driving affects the whole community and they want to help lower road trauma to zero.

“We have over 100 players who fit the demographic that is most impacted but age has not discriminated anyone who speeds, drinks alcohol, takes drugs or uses their phone when driving,” Mr Flenley said.
Head of AFL Victoria Rick Bell said the initiative was important as it raised awareness for people in communities that had the highest incidence of road trauma, specifically rural communities
“By raising awareness, we can educate the football community in Victoria to think twice before making decisions,” Mr Bell said.
“Competing teams are doing their part in educating and increasing awareness to those around them and the wider football community.”
The Towards Zero match will be held on Saturday, 2pm, at Chelsworth Park, Ivanhoe.
The club is also hosting road safety presentations by police officer Stuart Thompson at 7.15pm on Thursday, at the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians FC Social Rooms, Irvine Rd, Ivanhoe, Chelsworth Park.
