UPDATE: People have been allowed to return to evacuated buildings after a major gas leak in Oakleigh South.
Dozens of people were forced to leave houses and commercial buildings in Valley St and Haughton Rd this morning after Metropolitan Fire Brigade firefighters were called to Valley St at 7.46am.

A gas main was ruptured by earthmoving equipment and firefighters in protective gear worked to stop the leak amid a possible explosion.
In a statement, the MFB said about 25 firefighters in protective equipment applied water sprays as a preventive measure against explosion and to safely disperse the gas.

Several streets in the area, including Valley St, were closed and a community advice notice was issued due to the “inherent danger of possible explosion”, the statement said.
The gas company turned off the gas just before 10.30am and the MFB cleared the scene about 11am.
