Smart technology could revolutionise a Monash suburb and lead the way in improving liveability.
The Oakleigh project will give people the ability to know when and where parking is available, bins are full and to control and adjust lighting remotely.
Monash Council hopes to launch its i-Sense Oakleigh project in 2020 and could be expanded to other areas after a Federal Government cash boost.

Monash Mayor Shane McCluskey said the project aimed to provide a range of smart technologies that could include lighting, bin sensors, parking signs and wi-fi that was connected to a central control point.
“The community will benefit from the ability to better plan their trip to Oakleigh and council can have increased ability to be responsive to managing and maintaining assets and services,” Cr McCluskey said.
Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge said many of the projects would collect valuable, sensor-based data that once analysed could mean sharing the projects nationally and internationally.
“This program helps local governments who are pushing the boundaries with new ideas to address liveability issues that are facing local communities everywhere,” he said. Cr McCluskey said it was anticipated the test rollout of the project would be completed by 2020, with the $5.8 million reconstruction of Atherton Rd proving ideal for these works to be part of the project.
The Federal Government contributed $700,000 to the project, while Monash University — which is the technical partner — chipped in $70,000.
