A scooter rider who was allegedly under the influence of drugs will face court after he zoomed past a stop sign unaware that police were right behind him.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said officers noticed the rider while patrolling along Whitehorse Rd in Nunawading on July 16 at 8.30pm.

Sgt Egan said the rider, a 36-year-old Nunawading man, was allegedly travelling at more than 40 km/h in the road’s service lane near the Eastside Mitsubishi car dealership.

The rider was not wearing a helmet and his scooter didn’t have any lights.

Under Victorian road rules, e-scooter users can travel at a maximum of 10km/h or with an engine that is 200 watts or lower.

If they exceed those limits, they face the same rules as someone driving a car or motorbike.

Sgt Egan said the rider made no effort to stop or slow down, and after pulling him over, they found his scooter had a 2400 watt engine.

His scooter was impounded and the man also tested positive after a drug test.

Sgt Egan said the man would be charged on summons for unlicensed riding, using an unregistered vehicle, driving under the influence of an illegal drug, failing to wear a helmet and failing to obey a stop sign.

The man will face the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
