Nominations are open for the Banyule Citizen of the Year Award.
Ray Dark was last year’s recipient of the award, celebrated for his 27 years of service as a volunteer at Vic SES.
He helped with high-profile search operations, responded to some of Victoria’s most ferocious weather events and offered support to firefighters during the Black Saturday fires.
Once, during the 1990s, he helped save a drowning St Bernard that had run into trouble in Merri Creek — a feat which took half a dozen SES volunteers and a blanket lift to get the dog safely out.
The 71-year-old Watsonia man said he was “embarrassed” to win the award.
“I’m sure there are more deserving people than me,” he said at the time.
Acting Mayor Alison Champion said the award was a chance to recognise an exceptional member of the community.
“It honours and celebrates the achievements of ordinary people who do extraordinary things.”
“It will be presented to someone whose service and commitment has greatly benefited and enriched our community,” Cr Champion said.
