Heidelberg Primary School veteran teacher inspires generations

The world was a different place when Peter Ruff began his teaching career 56 years ago. He’s been a well-loved science teacher at Heidelberg Primary School for 30 years and inspired hundreds of students. And he has some intriguing stories to tell.

When Peter Ruff started teaching 56 years ago there were no smartboards, iPads or electronic roll systems.

He joined the staff at Heidelberg Primary School in 1990, just down the road from St John’s Primary, where he went to school as a child.

“We used to get into schoolyard fights with the kids from Heidelberg Primary, so I’m on the other side now,” Mr Ruff said.

The highly respected and loved teacher joined the school as assistant principal 30 years ago and taught PE, art and science.

“I love the kids and we have a lot of fun. If I didn’t like doing it I wouldn’t stay,” Mr Ruff said.

Mr Ruff has taught and inspired many generations of children since he started teaching at Omeo Primary almost six decades ago.

A student once reached out to Mr Ruff to tell him he was completing an honours degree in science, to the shock of the veteran teacher.

“He was always mucking around and never listening, but he told me I made an impact,” he said.

“I enjoy the challenges of being a teacher; a lot of students surprise you.”

Grade 6 student Zac Cheney has had Mr Ruff as his teacher since Prep and said he was different from other teachers.

“He’s fun and interactive, he tells stories about his life and he’s got a lot because of how old he is. Every story has a moral to it and relates back to what we’re learning,” Zac said.

Fellow student Joanne James, 11, said Mr Ruff made science fun.

“He doesn’t make it boring and he makes sure we all enjoy the class and leave with a little smile at the end of the day,” she said.

Mr Ruff was inspired by his Year 9 teacher, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Denehy, prompting his move into the education industry.

“He was a highly decorated officer in the First World War who was tough but fair. I had a fair few beltings off him but I honestly, I deserved everyone,” he said.

Mr Ruff has seen a lot of changes in Heidelberg since he grew up in the area.

“Heidelberg was a lot smaller and back in my day it was known as Sleepy Hollow, we enjoyed a lot of freedom,” he said.

Mr Ruff has no plans to retire and has already begun preparation for next year’s Science Day.

“I’ve got no inclination to pull the pin any time soon,” he said.
