A Brunswick police officer punched a co-worker on the dancefloor of a colleague’s wedding has been ordered to take an anger management class.
Brooke Louise Surgeon, 33, was placed on a diversion in the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Thursday after she was charged with assault and behaving in an offensive manner at a wedding in Coldstream.
Surgeon was a sergeant at the Brunswick police station when she attended the February 2023 wedding at the now-closed Riverstone Estate.
During the reception, Surgeon argued with a senior constable from the same station, with both using loud and crude language as they took the disagreement onto the grass dancefloor.
Surgeon took the junior ranking officer’s phone, causing the co-worker to put her arm across Surgeon’s throat as she tried to retrieve it.
In the tussle, Surgeon punched the lower part of the constable’s throat and then pushed her in the same area.
She was then pulled away from the fight by a wedding guest.
Another guest — who also assisted in breaking up the fight — saw Surgeon throw the phone into the carpark.
When a witness told the accused to go home she told them to “shut the f--k up you CIRT (Critical Incident Response Team) c---, I’ll f---ing smash you”.
The court heard the prosecution was supportive of Surgeon being placed on diversion.
Diversion is a way for offenders to avoid a criminal record by completing specific requirements ordered by a magistrate.
Surgeon was placed on a six month diversion, fined $500 and ordered to undertake an anger management class.
She was suspended from Victoria Police after the incident and has since opened her own business.
