A house fire has caused an early morning stir in Melbourne’s south east.

Emergency services were called to Mulgrave on Monday about around 6.45am following reports of a house fire.

Crews arrived at the Shaftsbury Drive property within minutes.

Firefighters clearing the scene said it was hard to tell what had started the blaze

“The fire spread through the entire house,” one said.

“It looks like it started in the front room but we won’t be 100 per cent sure until our investigation is complete.”

Onlookers said sirens and helicopters alerted them to the blaze.

“I heard the sirens this morning, but I couldn’t see the fire from my window. I was concerned that it might be our elderly neighbours, but turns out the fire was right next door,” a

neighbour said.

“There were a number of helicopters and fire trucks outside the house this morning, so I was more concerned about the boys that live there.

“But thankfully nobody went to hospital and nobody was hurt.’’

A spokesperson from Fire Rescue Victoria said more than 20 firefighters attended the inferno.

“Crews were able to bring the blaze under control in 40 minutes,” they said.

“We were also assisted by Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police.”

A spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria said nobody was taken to hospital.
