Everyday people are being urged to search the state government’s online database to find out if they’re among the hundreds of thousands of Melburnians with unclaimed money sitting in state coffers.
Wayward share dividends, lost salaries and uncollected sale proceeds make their way to the state revenue office where a cool $123 million — from about 825,000 entitlements — is sitting untouched.
And one Mulgrave woman stands to become almost a millionaire if she claims the $994,994 — the single biggest entitlement — that is rightfully hers.
In Brighton East one woman has $412,610 waiting for her, while in the western suburb of Ardeer in a woman stands to be $259,828 richer if she comes forward.
A man in Ivanhoe East has a whopping 70 entitlements in his name for a grand total of $16,888.
The state revenue office last year returned about $16 million after people made claims through its website.
The top five suburbs where thousands of people are owed money are Richmond ($958,894), Doncaster ($578,609), Footscray ($433,888), Hoppers Crossing ($347,916) and Eltham ($284,951).

Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas said people would know within seconds if they’re “sitting on an unexpected windfall”.
“This is money that is just waiting for be collected by their rightful owners. We encourage all Victorians, businesses and community groups to do a search – you may be pleasantly surprised,” he said.
