A four-storey building with 86 units has been approved to replace two three-bedroom homes on a Clayton street, despite community objections.
But councillors and council officers say the development is appropriate for the site, due to its closeness to Monash University — a mere 60m away.
The property at 71-73 Beddoe Ave on 1480sq m, near the corner of the Princes Hwy, was sold for $4.258m in July last year.
Initial plans were roundly lambasted by council officers and neighbours, accruing 14 objections, but an amended proposal has been ticked off.
The 86 units are projected to comprise 59 self-contained studio units, 19 one-bedroom apartments and eight two-bedroom apartments.
The 15.88m-tall building will include 29 carparks and spaces for 47 bikes, while a convenience shop — originally slated to be open 24 hours and since reduced to operating hours of 6am to 10pm — is also included.

Objections for the $9.5m development included neighbourhood character, no laundry facilities and poor internal amenity.
Councillor Stuart James said he appreciated the “honesty behind what it is to be used for”.
“At least the developer has been upfront,” he said. “It is in a good location, only two streets from the university.”
