Monash: Stolen cars cause havoc in Mt Waverley, Glen Waverley

There’s been a spike in crashes on Monash roads, and a number of them are the fault of drivers in stolen cars who don’t stick around to see the damage.

A spate of car thefts is believed to have contributed to a rise in the number of crashes on Monash roads.

More than 20 crashes across Monash were recorded by the Nunawading highway patrol in the past week, with some involving stolen cars where the driver fled the scene, and some leading to innocent people being taken to hospital.

Sergeant Paul Egan said the car thefts had contributed to the above average number of incidents in Monash, while there were fewer incidents than usual in neighbouring areas, such as Manningham and Boroondara.

The driver of a stolen Audi caused a four-car collision in Mt Waverley about 8.50pm yesterday.

They ran a red light at the intersection of High St and Huntingdale roads, smashing into a Mazda in the middle of the intersection, before the car continued over a median strip and crashed into a car parked on the other side of High St, pushing it into another parked car.

Sgt Egan said the offending driver fled the scene, while a 29-year-old Ashwood woman who was sitting in the driver’s seat of the first parked car had to be taken to Monash Hospital with minor injuries.

Sgt Egan said no one else was injured in the crash, but the Audi, which had been stolen from a Mt Waverley property earlier in the day, was extensively damaged.

Another woman had to be taken to hospital after the driver of a stolen Volkswagen Golf crashed into her Mazda in Glen Waverley on Tuesday, December 3.

Sgt Egan said the driver of the stolen car, which had been taken from a Glen Waverley property on November 23, was overtaking another car on Capital Ave about 11.20am when they collided head on with the Mazda.

The offending driver ran away and a 64-year-old Glen Waverley woman was taken to Box Hill Hospital with minor injuries.

A third stolen car was left abandoned in the front garden of a property on Darbyshire Rd, Mt Waverley about 8.13pm on Saturday, November 30.

Sgt Egan said the driver had crashed into the back of a parked car before the Ford ended up across the footpath, half in the garden.

He said a female was seen fleeing the scene.

Police are calling for anyone who witnessed any of the incidents, or who may have dashcam footage of them, to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
