Eastern street watch: Templestowe car theft, Mont Albert and Hughesdale

A man involved in a car crash had his car stolen by the other driver when he stopped to examine the damage. Read about it and other incidents in the east, including Mont Albert and Hughesdale.

A man has had his car stolen after a collision in Templestowe — by the driver of the other car.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said the bizarre incident happened after

a red Mazda and a silver Lexus collided when they were merging on High St near McGahy St about 2.30pm on Tuesday, November 26.

Sgt Egan said when the driver of the Lexus was taking photos of the damage, the driver of the Mazda jumped in the Lexus and drove off.

Meanwhile, a passenger in the Mazda jumped into the driver’s seat and also fled the scene.

Sgt Egan said police believe the Mazda had fake number plates, and the car may have been stolen.

He said it sounded like the theft was opportunistic, but couldn’t rule out the crash was a deliberate act to allow the theft of the Lexus

Police are calling for anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage to phone 1800 333 000.

MONT ALBERT

A driver had to be cut from his car and taken to hospital after he was hit by a tram after an attempted U-turn went bad.

The 74-year-old Mont Albert man was doing a U-turn near the intersection of Whitehorse and Elgar roads in Mont Albert about 4.49pm on Thursday, November 28 when the driver door of his Nissan station wagon was struck by the tram.

The man was trapped in his car and had to be cut out by the MFB, according to Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan, before he was taken to Box Hill Hospital with minor injuries.

Sgt Egan said the driver said he hadn’t seen the tram when he tried to get across to the service station.

It is expected he will be given an infringement notice for failing to give way.

HUGHESDALE

A man has had to be put into an induced coma after he was hit by a car in Hughesdale about 8.19am on Wednesday, November 27.

The 69-year-old Aspendale Gardens man was crossing Kangaroo Rd near Skipton Rd when he was knocked over by a Toyota sedan being driven by a 44-year-old Hughesdale woman.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said the man ended up unconscious on the road and was taken to The Alfred with serious injuries.

Sgt Egan said police were waiting to speak to the man before they proceeded with the investigation, but anyone who witnessed the incident or might have dashcam footage should contact Crime Stoppers.
