Mitcham park-goers are being urged to “be vigilant” as more piles of human faeces turn up in the suburb’s parkland. And a councillor is calling for the public’s help to stop the culprit.

Mitcham park-goers are being urged to “be vigilant” as more piles of human faeces turn up in the suburb.

Large quantities of human excrement have been found on the grass near the Chasta Crescent playground, just weeks after a series of similar deposits were dumped around Simpson Park.

Whitehorse Council officers removed the faeces from the neighbourhood reserve on Saturday, June 1 after receiving reports of the health hazard.

But more piles of excrement had emerged in a similar spot — near the Cochrane St car park — by Monday, June 3 when Councillor Prue Cutts visited the park.

Several dumpings of human excrement turned up in Simpson Park in March and April.

Cr Cutts said she was absolutely “sickened” by the behaviour, with the large quantities of faeces believed to be caused by someone illegally emptying a portaloo.

“This is ongoing and needs to be stopped,” she said.

“The offender appears to be relishing the attention and re committing the same crime. And it is a crime.”

“It’s a public health issue,” she said.

The excrement was found in a space which is an off-lead dog area and near to a popular children’s playground.

Waste being dumped in an off-lead area at Simpson Park caused concern for the health of a five-month-pregnant woman in April after her dog rolled in the human waste and she came into contact with it.

Cr Cutts has taken to Facebook to warn residents to “be vigilant” when they are “out and about” and to call for anyone who sees “anything suspicious” regarding the waste dumping to contact Forest Hill police on 8847 3600.

Whitehorse Council officer general manager infrastructure Nigel Brown said the council had reported the “number of instances of human waste being dumped at various locations around Somers Trail and Simpson Park” to Victoria Police.

Mr Brown said council officers had installed signs at the park.

“Council encourages anyone witnessing these incidents to contact either Council or Victoria

Police,” he said.
