A Year 11 student from a Catholic boy’s school in Melbourne’s southeast has been “senselessly beaten” by three other teenagers at a school camp.

The Leader has been told the vicious assault took place at a Year 11 Mazenod College Careers and Industry camp, which was held at City CYC in Collins St, Melbourne between January 28 to 31.

It’s understood a group of four students attacked the boy, punching him to the ground and kicking him in a frenzied attack, which left him bloodied and bruised.

It’s believed the horrific incident was also filmed by several students and is now circulating on social media.

One parent, whose son attends the school and asked not to be named, slammed the attack as “senseless”.

“They just started beating up the boy and had planned to do so on the trip. It’s just so concerning as the school has such a good reputation – it’s concerning,” she said.

“When we found out about it, it made us think twice about school camps. How can we guarantee their safety?”

Another parent, who was “shocked” by the incident, said the group of boys involved were part of a “boys club” that had been problematic for years.

“It doesn’t surprise me that this happened. I hope the boy involved is OK. This kid and his friends have been trouble for a long time – I wish the school had’ve acted sooner to do something about it.”

Mazenod College principal Tony Coghlan said as a result of the incident, three students were “no longer enrolled at the college” and a fourth had been suspended for behaviour “inconsistent” with the values of the college.

It’s unclear whether the three “no longer enrolled” were expelled.

Mr Coghlan said the injured student had received counselling and there had been constant communication and support provided to him and his family.

“At times, young people may do things that fall short of our high expectations,” he said.

“The incident was dealt with immediately and there has been appropriate follow up and the college has consulted with the police regarding this matter.”

He said the safety and wellbeing of the college community continued to be paramount.

“However out of respect for the privacy of these adolescent boys, the college will be making no further comment on this incident.”

The incident comes after a tumultuous week for another Catholic boys’ school, St Kevin’s College, in which the school’s where principal Stephen Russell resigned, deputy principal Janet Canny was asked to stand down and head of sport Luke Travers was stood down amid a child grooming scandal.
