A RISING star in the bocce world is making waves internationally after discovering the sport at the Veneto Club in Bulleen.

It’s been a meteoric rise for Max Tricarico, who’s now ranked among the best young players internationally as he looks towards the World Junior Championships in October.

He discovered the sport five years ago at Bulleen’s Veneto Club.

Across Oceania and Asia, the 16-year-old is the number one under-18 player in the progressive throw discipline and equal first for the doubles rapid throw.

He took out the titles at the Oceania/Asia championship earlier this year and earned selection to represent Australia at October’s event as a result.

It’s all a confirmation of the value of the Alphington teen’s commitment, with him travelling to Bulleen to train three or four times a week.

Max has also won the Australian title for best precision throw and has been named best junior for the green and gold at consecutive Oceania/Asia championships.

They’re all significant honours but with the international bocce community pushing for the sport to be reintroduced to the Olympic Games, even bigger awards could be on the horizon.

Mum Dina Tricarico said Max would be ready for such a stage should the sport’s promotion happen.

“These are prestigious events which are hosted by different countries around the world every year. They recognise the best of the best young players who have significant merit for future championships and at the Olympics,” she said.

“With the Olympics being held in Paris in 2024 there is now a growing effort to get bocce back into the program.”

Dina said Max was also well known for helping out younger players in a bid to help grow the sport.

“You’ll always find him assisting and helping out younger players,” she said.
