Manningham detectives shut down brothel at Frederick St Doncaster apartment complex

Reports of an aggravated burglary involving fire crackers and drugs led police to an apartment building in Melbourne’s east. But what they found inside was something a little more risque.

An illegal brothel operating at an apartment complex in Melbourne’s east has been shut down after it was uncovered while police investigated an aggravated burglary.

Manningham detective Senior Sergeant Rohan Courtis said officers made the discovery on April 30 at the complex in Doncaster’s Frederick St.

Sen-Sgt Courtis said officers were investigating a prior incident when a man allegedly broke into one of the apartments while carrying fire crackers and drugs on April 15.

They went to an apartment on the second floor and arrested two Chinese women.

An estimated $13,000 cash, a taser and bags of “powders and pills” were also seized for analysis by forensic investigators.

Sen-Sgt Courtis said the illegal brothel, which had been operating for over 12 months, was unnamed and workers had been offering sexual services online.

He said the apartment has since been vacated after the two workers’ arrest.

“I think residents will be very pleased not to have an operational brothel at their complex,” Sen-Sgt Courtis said.

The two women, aged 22 and 34, were living in NSW and had arrived at the apartment a few days before police made their discovery.

Sen-Sgt Courtis said they were taken to Box Hill police station for questioning and fined $1652 each for breaching coronavirus lockdown regulations.

He said the two women were released pending summons in relation to the discovery of the cash and the taser, and reported to immigration and border force authorities.
