A 60-year-old man was wrenched from his car by a drug-affected drunk, who chased him down the street while brandishing a knife during a petrifying armed carjacking in Melbourne’s east.

A man who pulled a terrified 60-year-old man from his car and threatened him with a knife during a frightening car jacking has been locked up.

Jesse Trigg, 31, was sentenced by the County Court on July 14 to six years’ and five months’ jail after he pleaded guilty to the attempted carjacking as well as two counts of assault with a weapon, assaulting an emergency services worker, aggravated burglary and committing an indictable offence on bail.

Judge Michael Tinney told the court Trigg was intoxicated by alcohol and the drugs ice, Xanax and cannabis when he stumbled onto the road on October 3 last year.

Trigg had earlier broken into his estranged partner’s friend’s house where he threatened the woman with a knife and demanded she tell him the location of his partner and their infant child.

After leaving the petrified woman’s home Trigg walked onto the road in front of oncoming traffic, causing the 60-year-old motorist to swerve to avoid hitting Trigg before slamming on his breaks and coming to a stop.

Trigg then wrenched open the car door and dragged the man from his car before chasing him down the road while brandishing his knife, the court heard.

An off duty police officer answered the terrified man’s cries for help, causing Trigg to turn his fury on him, demanding he help him start the stolen car before police arrived and he was arrested.

Judge Tinney told the court Trigg was convicted of similar offending when he was a young man, for which he’d been jailed.

Unfortunately for Trigg, he’d failed to learn his lesson and now found himself back behind bars facing another prison stint, Judge Tinney told the court.

“You’ve not learnt your lesson from the very sizeable prison term imposed on you for very serious past offending,” Judge Tinney said.

“(Your victim) was driving his car and doing nothing wrong until he had the misfortune to come across you … they are serious crimes which plainly would impact on the respective victims.

“(This) cannot be put down to immaturity or the excesses of youth. You were no silly teenager out committing foolish rudimentary offences.”

Judge Tinney ordered Trigg serve at least four years and three months of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

He also declared had it not been for Trigg’s early guilty plea, he would have sentenced him to eight and a half years in jail.
