A Glen Waverley man who brutally held down his ex-girlfriend’s puppy and then stomped on is “genuinely remorseful” for his actions, a court has heard.
Jun Zhang fronted the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to one charge of animal cruelty and one criminal damage charge.
The court heard Zhang pinned down his ex-girlfriend’s puppy, Bomber, and kicked it several times in July, 2023.
Bomber was taken to the RSPCA and treated by a vet for injuries after the brutal attack.
The puppy was rehomed after it recovered.
Zhang’s lawyer told the court he was a “man of good character” who made an “unsightly decision.”
He also said Zhang was “genuinely remorseful” for harming the dog.
Shortly before his guilty plea, Zhang reached out to the RSPCA and offered to pay the more than $3000 vet and rehoming costs for Bomber.
Zhang also commenced the men’s behavioural change program.
His sentence was deferred so he could complete the program and make payment to the RSPCA.
Zhang will next front Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on February 10, 2025.
