George St Doncaster: 4WD hits tree, rolls after crashing into two oncoming cars

A Doncaster man who was “testing out” his new 4WD wrote it off and put himself in hospital after it hit two cars, rolled and ended up in a resident’s front yard.

A Doncaster man who was hooning along in his new 4WD is likely to be charged after it hit two cars, rolled and ended up in a front yard in a terrifying crash that also put himself and another woman in hospital.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said the incident occurred on June 27 when the man was driving his white Toyota on George St in Doncaster about 7.15pm.

Sgt Egan said the man was overtaking cars and went over a crest when the 4WD collided into oncoming traffic on the opposite side of the road.

The 4WD hit a black Mini Minor, which spun out onto the footpath, and then also hit a black Toyota sedan which was travelling behind it.

Sgt Egan said the 4WD bounced off the second car, hit a tree, and rolled into the front yard of a house.

The 4WD driver, a 69-year-old Doncaster man, was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with cracked ribs and other injuries, where he remains in a stable condition.

The Mini Minor driver, a 42-year-old Donvale woman, was also taken to the hospital for observation and later released.

Two people inside the black sedan, a 52-year-old Lower Templestowe woman and a 67-year-old Doncaster East passenger, were uninjured.

Sgt Egan said the man told police before being taken to hospital he was “testing out” the new 4WD and travelling at more than 100km/h in the street, which has a 60km/h speed limit.

He said police were continuing investigations to determine the car’s speed at the time of the crash and its circumstances.

Sgt Egan said the 4WD was written off and towed away, and the man would be interviewed by police once he left hospital.

”Public roads are not a place to test the capability of cars,” Sgt Egan said.

“The rules and speed limits are there for a reason, and if they are not followed, this is what can happen.”
