An Eltham man was found drunk and blocking traffic in Warrandyte on Wednesday because he didn’t know how to change a tyre.

Doncaster police found the Nissan Pulsar missing a tyre and blocking a lane of traffic on Yarra Rd at 3am.

They spoke to the driver, a 19-year-old Eltham man, who claimed he got a puncture.

The driver said he had driven as far as he could because he and his passenger, a 22-year-old Ringwood man, didn’t know how to change a tyre.

According to police, both men blamed society for not teaching them how to change the tyre, and they were each given $1692 fines for breaching coronavirus stay-at-home restrictions.

Officers breath tested the Eltham man and he was found to be more than three times over the legal limit after he recorded a blood alcohol reading of .162.

They immediately suspended his driver’s licence for 12 months and he is expected to be charged on summons and face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Doncaster police Sergeant Paul Dart said the car’s front wheel was “totally disintegrated” and he described the driver’s actions as “very irresponsible”.

“When you’re three times over the limit, you’re not thinking clearly and not making sensible decisions,” Sgt Dart said.

“The fact they had driven such a significant distance on a rim would’ve presented quite a potentially dangerous situation to lose control of the car.”

Sgt Dart said the incident also served as a reminder for drivers to comply with the State Government’s stay-at-home restrictions due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“We have a significant presence out there to detect people breaching restrictions,” he said.

“Any time of day or night, police could potentially be stopping you to confirm whether you have a legitimate reason to be on the roads.”
