A teenager has suffered serious brain injuries and is in a coma after he was assaulted by a group of up to 15 youths in a brawl near Westfield Doncaster.
Manningham police detective Senior Sergeant Rohan Courtis said the incident occured at 5.45pm in the Shoppingtown Hotel carpark on Williamsons Rd, near the shopping centre.
Sen-Sgt Courtis said a 15-year-old male and two friends were walking past the pub when they were approached by a group of 10-15 youths.
A fight broke out at the Lawsford St end of the carpark where the 15-year-old was attacked and sustained serious head injuries.
He self-presented to a nearby hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life-threatening condition.
Sen-Sgt Courtis said the three youths were locals and police were trying to determine whether the alleged attackers — aged in their teens and early 20s — were also from the area.
He said it was unclear if the attack was planned or if weapons were involved.
Sen-Sgt Courtis condemned the attack and urged anyone with information or video footage to contact police to help with their investigations.
“People have the right to go about their business in a safe manner and should be able to walk the streets at any time of night,” he said.
“This has put a young person in hospital, a family is concerned, and it causes public concerns as well and we don’t want this to occur to any young person.”
Sen-Sgt Courtis said police were increasing patrols and security around the area and at Westfield Doncaster in the wake of the incident.
“We’ve got a lot of resources working on this at the moment, and we will continue those patrols in that particular area to ensure the community is safe.”
