A TEEN netball sensation hopes to see a professional men’s competition set up in Australia to give boys a pathway to an elite career in the sport.

Bodhi Stringer will represent Australia in an under-17s boys tour of New Zealand in September.

The Doncaster and Districts Netball Association star took up the game about seven years ago, first catching the eye of Victorian team selectors about two years ago.

Last year, he captained Victoria’s under-17 reserves side at the age of 15.

Stringer learned of his first call-up to a national team a few weeks ago.

“It’s pretty exciting to find out you’ll be representing your country,” he said.

“It was very thrilling to get that phone call a few weeks ago.”

Stringer hopes to one day play senior netball for Australia but also dreams of seeing a professional men’s competition set up to complement the Suncorp Super Netball series.

“It would be really good to see something similar to the super netball set up with a men’s team for each of the Suncorp teams and they play before the women’s games,” he said.

From Ivanhoe, the 15-year-old started playing netball at the suggestion of friends.

“A couple of my friends were playing it and they had training one morning,” he said.

“I kind of just joined in and took it pretty well, and haven’t looked back.”

Stringer said there was a number of elements to the sport he enjoyed.

“It’s also got a very high fitness component and is quite a quick sport,” he said.

Stringer is a 2018 Leader Local Sports Star Junior Nominee. Sports Star categories include junior, senior, junior team, sporting spirit and service to sport.
