ENGLISH midcourter Serena Guthrie says a lesson learned 12 months ago is now being put into play as the Giants stage a late charge for the Super Netball minor premiership.
Guthrie, part of the Roses team which beat the Diamonds for the Commonwealth Games gold earlier this year, said the Giants remember well how they squandered their chance to win the minor premiership in the inaugural season of Super Netball.
And dominating this weekend’s second last game of the regular season is crucial to their campaign.

“This is huge. we are very aware this time last year we lost a couple of games and we can’t let that happen again,’’ said Guthrie, ahead of the Giants match with the Magpies on Sunday.
“We want the home court advantage (for the semi-finals).
“Last year we lost to the Firebirds and Lightning in our last games and fell from first to third.
“That’s a lesson learned.’’
If the Giants dominate the Magpies in Melbourne, the battle for the minor premiership will come down to next Saturday’s match against West Coast Fever at the Sydney International Convention Centre.

Guthrie said with so much travel involved for teams trekking to Perth for matches, claiming a home advantage for the semis was vital.
“It will be an emotional game for them in respect to Sharni,’’ Guthrie said of former Diamond Sharni Layton playing her final game at home before retiring next weekend.
“We are just focusing on what they are capable of and they are capable of causing some real damage.
“We understand the importance of the game. We have the chance to win the minor premiership last year and didn’t take it.’’
