DIRTY nappies, broken glass, old car tyres and even used toilet paper are being dumped alongside one of the Yarra River’s most scenic swimming spots.

TOILET paper smeared with human faeces is the latest in a spate of illegally dumped rubbish near the Yarra River’s edge in Warburton East.

Sally McDonald made the disgusting find when she was walking her dogs Friday and Honey along the bank last Thursday.

“There is often rubbish left around, but this was the worst I’ve seen to date,” Ms McDonald said. “Toilet paper with faeces, discarded in full view.”

Ms McDonald said this year she had noticed an increase in rubbish strewn near the river including plastic bags, broken and intact glass bottles, cans and dirty nappies.

“Many people visit this area as it is safe swimming for kids and I often see campers there,” she said.

An animal or child could have stepped on the dirty toilet paper or it could have drifted into the clean river water, she said.

“I cleaned up the mess with an old shirt … and took it to the bin which was 50m away,” she said.

“I don’t understand why people have to be so filthy when there is a public toilet opposite the school about half a minute’s drive away.”

Although there was a sign prohibiting rubbish dumping and threatening legal action, Ms McDonald said she would like to see frequent patrols of the area and more bins.

Last year Leader reported a Woori Yallock fisherman was fed up with people dumping rubbish including old furniture, bags of cement, and general waste along a stretch of the Yarra River in Millgrove.

Kris Leckie previously told Leader he had seen people destroy vegetation while creating makeshift camps with fire pits and old furniture. The camps were regularly left behind along with beer bottles and food wrappers.

Leader has contacted Yarra Ranges Council and Melbourne Water for comment.
