A COUPLE who live near Macleod railway station say commuters searching for car parking are welcome to use their driveway — and even their front lawn — when a major level crossing removal begins.

TWO good Samaritans in Macleod are looking to give a helping hand to frustrated commuters “the old fashioned way”.

Work will soon begin on the Lower Plenty Rd level crossing removal, and the closure of Rosanna station is expected to bump up traffic at nearby Macleod.

Charlie and Monica Bongailas, who live right next to Macleod station, are offering their driveway as a free parking space to three cars every day during the Lower Plenty Rd Level Crossing Removal Project.

Mrs Bongailas said they were even happy for a car to park on their front lawn.

“Everything is about money today and I’m so over it,” she said.

“A lot of people are parking way up the street where there are no parking bays and I thought we could help out.”

The couple live on Aberdeen Rd and are a three minute walk away from the station.

Traffic volumes are expected to increase in the area once Rosanna Station is closed for works on Friday, October 6 until March 2018.

This isn’t the first time Mr and Mrs Bongailas have made room for others.

The family has offered their driveway to workers at the local shops who were previously forced to move their cars every two hours.

When the couple lived in Heidelberg, they often opened up their gates for visitors and workers at the Austin Hospital.

“We just want to help out humble workers who are stressed about where they are going to park,” she said.

Recently two people offered to rent out spaces in their Manningham garages to commuters trying to find parking spaces at the congested Doncaster Park and Ride. One woman, Camille Cain offered to rent out space in her garage for $55 a week.
