An eastern suburbs property developer has plans to keep construction sites operating “as per normal” despite widespread lockdowns to contain coronavirus.

WestUrban Group is in the middle of several apartment and multi-unit projects, including sites in Box Hill, Doncaster, Boronia, Croydon and Mt Waverley.

Hundreds of construction staff would be affected by closures, along with disruption to sales and timelines for owners or renters to move in.

Company spokesman Jean Ding said work would continue “at this stage”.

“We will review this decision in a timely manner in order to respond to the state and federal government’s further instructions,” he said.

“We are still in the process of responding to the evolving COVID-19 situation and are committed to developing the policy and procedure to ensure all our sites are safe and hygienic.”

CFMEU national construction secretary Dave Noonan said it was vital sites remained operational.

“The construction industry is a critical backbone of the Australian economy and if our industry is hit by COVID-19-related shocks the whole economy will suffer,” Mr Noonan said.

“Many workers in the industry are asking what their rights are and where they should turn for accurate information during this pandemic.

“Our advice is that any member directed to leave work or isolate from work should immediately contact the union.”

Mr Noonan said all construction workers were “urged to observe the health and hygiene measures as advised by medical authorities”.
