Chadstone shopping centre will add 850 new parking spaces as part of its multimillion-dollar revamp.
The first stage of Chadstone’s parking projects will add two new levels of parking, including more than 400 solar-shaded parking bays, on top of its existing David Jones carpark.
Works on the carpark are set to begin in February next year, with an initial reduction of 1200 car spaces during construction and its completion due by September.
Vicinity Centres chief development officer Carolyn Viney said the centre had listened to its customers and the local community who had called for additional parking.
“We’re pleased the additional 850 spaces will provide customers with more than 11,000 free parking spaces,” Ms Viney said.
“Once completed, in Spring 2021, customers will also enjoy undercover, solar-shaded parking on the rooftop, with an 1.6MW solar system generating enough energy to power more than 340 average Australian homes each year,” she said.
Vicinity has invested $73 million in solar across Australia and Chadstone will become the 21st centre in Vicinity’s portfolio to install a renewable energy system.
The centre’s $685 million redevelopment will also include an extended dining and entertainment precinct next to Hoyts with leisure attractions and a bar for more than 600 guests.
There will also be another carpark near Coles, with an extra 582 spots, with most to be reserved during the week for staff and workers at a nine-level office tower on Middle Rd.
The tower will reach 12 storeys and be connected to a new fresh food, wellness and co-working precinct below.
Ms Viney said the centre was improving access with wider ramps and new directional signage to create a better flow of traffic including an upgraded parking guidance system, directing customers to the most convenient parking available.
The first stage of the car park project is expected to generate close to 300 full time equivalent jobs for Victorians during construction.
