PEOPLE who have gripes with the state of the area’s trains, buses and roads are urged to air their concerns at the Monash Metropolitan Transport Forum next week.
The community is invited to attend a public meeting, hosted by Monash Council, to discuss public transport, roads, bicycles and pedestrian safety with major party candidates for the seat of Oakleigh in November’s state election.
Among the hot topics to be debated at the event on Wednesday, October 8, are a better bus network, upgrades to Clayton and Huntingdale railway stations and potential for a Rowville train line.
Residents will have the opportunity to hear Oakleigh state Liberal candidate Theo Zographos, Labor candidate Stephen Dimopoulos and Greens candidate Steven Merriel respond to questions.
Both Cr Zographos and Cr Dimopoulos are Monash councillors.
Monash University public transport expert Professor Graham Currie will chair the forum.
Prof Currie said he encouraged locals to attend because it presented a rare opportunity to have their say as well as to hear the views of all sides of politics.
“Transport is a major problem locally ... and it’s time for the parties to stand up and be counted on their policies,” he said.
He said he hoped the forum would lead to action and greater investment in public transport.
Prof Currie said he believed Monash would particularly benefit from a boost in train capacity to beat overcrowding, and a revamped bus network.
“I want to see our problems addressed with real commitments rather than just talked about,” he said.
The Metropolitan Transport Forum is a group of councils that is hosting more than a dozen meetings across Melbourne in the lead-up to the election.
The Monash forum will be held at Oakleigh Hall, 142-144 Drummond St, Oakleigh from 7-8.15pm on October 8.
