A man has been killed after the car he was driving crashed into a tree in Melbourne’s east. His female passenger remains in hospital.

A man has died after his car veered off the road and hit a tree in Melbourne’s east, while a woman in the passenger seat is in hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened on Burwood Highway, between Blackburn Rd and Lakeside Drive, about 10am today.
Police say the car was travelling east when it careered off the road and hit a tree.
The man died at the scene.
His death brings the number of lives lost on Victorian roads this year to 68.
Acting Sergeant Ryan Melville said speed would be one of the factors police considered when investigating the crash.

Burwood Highway in Burwood East was closed eastbound for several hours, but has since reopened.
