A FAMILY has been left devastated after their cavoodle puppy was savagely killed by a rottweiler in Glen Waverley.
Peter, last name withheld, said his dad was walking nine-month-old cavoodle Teddy on Anzac Day in Belmont Rd when an off-lead rottweiler pushed through the loose palings of a backyard fence and launched a vicious attack.
“He grabbed Teddy’s neck and shook him — his bones broke into pieces and he died instantly,” Peter said.
Monash Mayor Paul Klisaris said the council was investigating.
“We can’t comment on any possible action to be taken until after the investigation is done.” The council has seized the dog.
Peter said his dad was lucky to escape with no injuries.
“My dad went into complete shock mode because he was afraid the (rottweiler) was going to turn on him,” he said.
Peter said the incident had traumatised his whole family.
“My children are just so distraught right now as I had to have a discussion with them about life and death — they loved Teddy so much,” he said.
He urged dog owners to be more responsible.
“The owners have been really apologetic and cooperative but I think it’s time for dog owners to be absolutely vigilant, especially when it comes to securing their property and ensuring their dogs are on leads,” he said.
So far this year there have been 38 reported dog attacks in Monash.
