An electric scooter battery sparked a fire that engulfed part of a Box Hill house with a male resident rushed to hospital with burns to his legs.

Twelve units and 30 firefighters rushed to Alexander St at 7.30am on Tuesday following calls to Triple-0.

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to a bedroom and ceiling space, bringing it under control in 14 minutes.

The man, in his 20s, was inside the house at the time and managed to escape.

He was treated by paramedics for burns to legs and was taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said investigators had determined the lithium battery from the scooter was the cause of the fire.

FRV firefighters remain at the scene to monitor the situation.
