A Boronia man accused of 23 burglaries of small businesses in the eastern suburbs from October last year has been denied bail.
John Nad, 47, applied for bail in the Ringwood Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon.
The Boronia man was charged with 70 offences in relation to 23 burglaries across the eastern suburbs between October and December last year.
Nad allegedly targeted small businesses across 17 suburbs from Bayswater to Hawthorn.
Police allege he scoped out the businesses, many of them cafes and restaurants, before breaking and entering.
He was also accused of targeting business more than once.
Nad allegedly wore a face covering and distinctive clothing that was captured in CCTV footage of the incidents.
He was arrested on New Year’s Day after two search warrants were executed at properties on Hayles St and Rankin Rd, Boronia.
Investigators allegedly found a slew of stolen property including safes, cash registers, phones, laptops and two motorcycles.
Homemade and imitation firearms, heroin, meth and cannabis were also allegedly seized along with distinctive clothing items.
Nad’s bail application was refused after it was ruled he was an unacceptable risk to the community despite strict proposed bail conditions.
When his bail was refused Nad, who appeared via court video link, began to yell.
“You just hound people like me,” he said.
“You just want me to be a criminal.”
Nad will stay in custody until his next court appearance in February.
