WHAT was once Blackburn North’s go-to milk bar is now a contemporary espresso bar and kitchen.

The old lollies and newspaper stands have been swapped out for speciality coffee, brunch and benches.

After 14 years working in hospitality across the world, Nunawading’s Ben Williamson has brought his passion home, repurposing the milk bar from his childhood.

Mr Williamson and one of his team grew up just streets from the space, and are endeavouring to bring the community charm of the local drop-in spot back to the area.

Battle seeks to house “the local living room” at the Diana Drive venue, which Mr Williamson made-over before opening the door on June 7.

He said he wanted to provide an espresso bar accessible to everyone in the area.

“It doesn’t need to be a pretentious atmosphere,” he said.

“It’s our chance to have a bit of fun with it.”

The business’ name has been drawn from ‘Battlefield’ — the English translation of indigenous name Nunawading.

“Our decision on Battle comes as a desire for something short, strong, bold but also doesn’t say too much about coffee or food and rather represents the family and friends within our community.”

The kitchen’s first menu was launched last month.

Customers can grab “bolder, simpler dishes” to go with their coffee: a ham and three-cheese toastie, banana bread, Bircher muesli, avo on toast or pastries.

“It’s a move away from the standard $20 bacon and eggs,” Mr Williamson said.

It’s just a few months old, but the cafe certainly isn’t struggling for business.

Mr Williamson said the team was very appreciative of its “hardcore local following”.

Located at 1 5/7 Diana Drive, Blackburn North, Battle is open everyday.
