Australia Post to close stores in Brandon Park shopping centre, Toorak Road Burwood

A struggling shopping centre has been dealt another blow, with Australia Post to close its outlet in the complex, along with another post shop in the east.

Australia Post will close two post offices in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs at the end of next month, due to a “substantial drop in customers”.

The company has announced it will close its outlets at Brandon Park Shopping Centre in Wheelers Hill and Camberwell Walk Arcade, off Toorak Rd Burwood.

The company said it was not a decision it made lightly and it had been keeping residents informed, giving 60 days notice of the closure, with signs posted in the post offices.

Post office box holders have also been informed of the decision via letter.

Australia Post is working closely with impacted staff, who are being offered opportunities at nearby outlets.

Australia Post also recently closed post offices in Essendon and Hampton.

It is another big blow for Brandon Park, with Kmart and a number of food outlets closing at the centre in recent years.

Newmark Capital has been given the green light to partially demolish the centre and build a seven-storey mixed-use space with serviced apartments and office space.

Wheelers Hill resident Mel Dinan said she was “shocked and disappointed” to hear the Brandon Park post office was closing.

“(It is) my closest and most convenient Australia Post outlet. I use this outlet multiple times per week,” she said.

“I was very shocked and disappointed when I was in store Monday to find out the outlet is permanently closing next month.

“At the time I found out this news I was in the queue waiting to be served. The queue was quite long, in fact back to the door with all counters open.

“With the retirement village across the road and the local demographic being older, the Brandon Park Australia Post is very convenient for them – it’s extremely disappointing to see it is closing.”

An Australia Post spokesperson said the company had made the difficult decision to close the Brandon Park Post Shop from June 30, following a substantial drop in customer visits over the past five years.

The spokesperson said the surrounding area was well-serviced, with four other post offices within a 3km radius, including the Wheelers Hill Shopping Centre about six minutes’ drive away, and Pinewood shopping village outlet about seven minutes’ drive away.

“Australia Post apologises to customers for any inconvenience and looks forward to welcoming them at one of our other nearby outlets.”
