A shopping centre in Melbourne’s east that has battled shop closures — including the loss of Kmart earlier this year — is set for a major revamp.

Newmark Capital, the property syndicate backed by former Hawthorn champion Chris Langford, has been given the green light to partially demolish Brandon Park Shopping Centre and build a seven-storey mixed-use space with serviced apartments and office space.

The expansion is expected to transform the area with retail and medical services on the ground floor, two levels of offices space and 103 serviced apartments.

The building is planned to have a landscaped design with green screens running up the building to level four, and planter boxes on the top three levels and open terraces.

A conference room and gym will also be included.

With construction beginning in mid 2023, the community can expect some disruption, Monash Mayor Cr Tina Samardzija said the impacts to the surrounding area would be limited.

The Melbourne property group has had the redevelopment in the pipeline since the company acquired the site in 2018.

An initial 10-storey application was knocked back by the council in 2021 before the seven-storey amended plan was proposed in July.

Newmark Capital’s head of property Angus Machutchison said the development would draw people to the area.

“The expanded offerings will bring more activity to the site including office and visitor populations, while the served apartments will serve the broader community by providing well located, high quality accommodation options,” he said.

The expansion comes after years of speculation surrounding the centre’s future as Kmart shut its doors after 38 years of trading earlier this year and local institution Muffin Break closed down the year before.
