Public transport in and around a designated major activity centre in Melbourne’s east is set for a major revamp over the coming decade.
Maroondah City Council outlined the proposed projects in its draft transport strategy for 2024 to 2034 — including road upgrades, new train stations, longer bus routes and new walking tracks.
Cyclists may soon be off major roads with council proposing a new 6.5km Ringwood to Croydon bike path along Bedford Rd, and a shared path way along connection Ringwood railway station to the Jubilee Park sports hub along Greenwood Ave.
The bus network is also set for expansion with more frequent bus services and extensions of the 688 and 664 bus routes.
Some major projects are already nearing completion including level crossing removals along the Lilydale line as well as the new Ringwood East and Croydon train stations.
Car share initiatives and the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations are also on the agenda.
Maroondah deputy major Paul McDonald said council would continue to advocate for large scale transport project
“Our advocacy is ongoing and should it continue to be successful, more
projects and service upgrades will be undertaken across Maroondah during the next 10
years,” he said.
Mr McDonald said all transport users would benefit from the changes.
“No matter how people choose to move around the municipality, the draft Maroondah Transport Strategy aims to ensure that there will be multiple benefits,” he said.
The council is seeking feedback on the draft strategy, with more than 100 already received.
Maroondah residents can give feedback via a survey on the Maroondah website or by emailing the council.
