Aged care homes across Melbourne are dealing with coronavirus outbreaks with hundreds of residents affected.
According to the Department of Health of Human Services, seven of the nine deaths reported on Friday were linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities.
Of the men who died, one was in his 60s, two were in their 80s, one was in his 90s and one was in his 100s.
Of the women who died one was in her 70s, two were in their 80s, and one was in her 90s.
To date, 385 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.
There are 1732 active cases related to aged care facilities.
As the aged care outbreaks continue to grow the state has taken over three additional aged care centres.
Glenlyn Aged Care in Glenroy is now being managed by Melbourne Health, Florence Aged Care in Altona North has been taken over by Western Health, and Kaylna Care is being managed by Bacchus Marsh Hospital, which is being led by Djerriwarrh Health Services with Ramsay Health Care also on-site.
A coronavirus outbreak at Regis Aged Care Brighton has claimed another four lives, bringing the total number of deaths at the centre to seven.
Managing Director and chief executive officer Linda Mellors confirmed that a total of 61 people had been infected with the virus as a result of the outbreak.
More than 400 residents in aged cares have been transferred to hospital since outbreaks began and the majority of these tested positive to coronavirus.
Premier Daniel Andrews said early signs indicated many infected healthcare staff were acquiring the virus outside of their workplaces.
“I’m not making any judgment on that that is just what the data is telling us,” he said.
