A former Burwood East nursery has become a graffiti-covered eyesore, with rubbish dumping and vandalism rife at the site.
The former Garden Sheds Galore and Paradise Gardens Nursery Cafe site, at 133-143 Burwood Highway, has been vacant for years, with the buildings now covered in graffiti and windows smashed.
The prominent site is close to several restaurants and homes, and is about 1.5km away from Kmart Burwood.
Whitehorse Council general manager of corporate services Peter Smith said the council was working with the owner of the former nursery site to remove graffiti and rubbish.
“Well-maintained properties add significantly to the amenity of the municipality, so for this reason property owners/occupiers are required to maintain their properties and prevent them from becoming unsightly,” Mr Smith said.
“Properties that are not maintained can have a negative impact on neighbouring properties and local businesses.”
Last year Whitehorse Leader reported angry neighbours had become frustrated by a number vandalised eyesores in the area, calling for owners to be slugged with heavy fines.
The Whitehorse Community Local Law requires property owners/occupiers to maintain their properties.
A failure to follow a notice to comply can include the issue of an infringement and referral to a magistrates’ court.
