Double-digit number plate sells for whopping Victorian record price

They’re two tiny bits of tin you stick on your car, but someone has paid as much as a three-bedroom family home for a custom number plate, more than doubling the previous Victorian record.

A rare Victorian number plate has sold for the same price as a small bayside house.

One of only 90 double digit plates in the state, the black and white enamel “26” plate was tipped to sell for between $600,000 – $700,000, but went for a whopping $1.11m.

It makes it the highest selling double digit plate in Victorian history.

In April last year the “59” number plate sold for an eye-watering $538,000, which was the previous highest price paid in Victoria.

National Auctions and External Relations Manager at Shannons Christophe Boribon said there had been good interest in the plate in the lead up to the auction.

“We had three strong bidders which really helped it to blow out,” he said.

“It performed really well, I was pleasantly surprised because it’s always a bit of an unknown on how they will travel.

“With everything going on around the world at the moment and consumers being uncertain it was hard to know what their confidence was going to be like too.”

Mr Boribon said the plate had been released in the early 1910s, most likely about 1911 or 1912 and its first owner was from Richmond.

He said the winning bidder was known to Shannons, but wasn’t sure which part of Melbourne they came from.

With the stockmarket stumbling and people not sure where to invest their money, Mr Boribon said the number plate was a good option.

“The rarity alone is a reason for it selling for so much, and obviously the lower the number the more valuable the plate,” he said.

“They’re all held in private hands, so you just don’t see them, and when they come up people are willing to pay.

“I don’t know if there was something in the numbers which helped boost the price as well.”

Mr Boribon said it was the highest selling item of the night, with three Holdens also outperforming expectations.

On the back of Holden’s closure in Australia the three vintage Holdens went for a combined $173,000.

“It was a packed auction room with over 600 bidders,” Mr Boribon said. “At the end of the night we had sold over $4m in items.”

A 1978 Holden HZ Premier 308 Sedan sold for $55,000, while the highest selling Holden of the night, a 1972 HQ Monaro 202 Coupe, went for $67,000.
