Coronavirus Victoria: 'Should my child wear a mask?' FAQs on masks answered

Cases of coronavirus continue to rise across the state, despite a dramatically smaller increase in infections the community has experienced in days.

This comes as the State Government makes face masks mandatory for all Victorians when they leave home as of 11.59pm on Sunday, August 2.

Another 354 cases and three deaths have been recorded across Victoria on Saturday, with the number of people battling coronavirus rising by more than 10 in Darebin 140 (+22), Casey 43 (+20), Moreland 338 (+18), Greater Geelong 88 (+15), Melton 351 (+11), and Maribyrnong 189 (+10).

While infections dropped in — Kingston 52 (-5), Nillumbik 51 (-4), Colac Otway 76 (-2), Manningham 43 (-1), Moorabool 11 (-1), and Glenelg 12 (-1).

Current restrictions will be in force across metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire until at least August 19.

After Thursday’s dark day, six regional areas – including Geelong and the Surf Coast – will be brought under tighter restrictions from Friday, while all Victorians will be made to wear face masks from Monday.

There are no plans for a downgrade to Stage 4 but Premier Daniel Andrews has refused to rule it out completely as he revealed nine out of 10 people did not stay at home when sick.

There will be some reasons not to wear a face covering, such as for medical reasons, kids aged under 12 years, those who have a professional reason or if it’s just not practical – like when running.

“These restrictions have become necessary because of the sharp increase in cases,” said Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.

“If you live in these areas, there’ll be only four reasons to leave your home: shopping for food and essential items; care and caregiving; daily exercise; and work and study, if you can’t do it from home.

“This stay at home direction will apply to your principal place of residence – which means you need to stay home and not use a holiday home.

“Restaurants and cafes will return to takeaway and delivery services only, and beauty and personal services will need to close. Entertainment and cultural venues will need to close. Community sport will also stop.”
