A beloved Brazilian restaurant and entertainment venue has closed, becoming another economic victim of the coronavirus crisis.

Copacabana International on Smith St in Fitzroy, which included all-you-can-eat Brazilian-style barbecue cuisines and a live Latin dance show, has been listed on ASIC’s liquidation list.

BRI Ferrier principal David Coyne, who is the appointed liquidator, confirmed the business had shut its doors, but could not provide further comment.

It’s understood the business, which closed in March when coronavirus restrictions began, suffered financial losses and was unable to keep afloat.

A message on the venue’s answering machine highlighted coronavirus restrictions saying: “We’ve been forced to close our doors for the foreseeable future”.

“We are attempting to contact all our existing bookings, but please be patient at this time as it’s a huge exercise and we are doing our very best in these very trying times,” the message said.

The Melbourne institution, which has been open for more than a decade, featured DJs, live bands and its infamous Latin American floor shows.

Its menu also featured authentic churrascaria-style barbecue, with seven types of meat including grilled chicken, lamb, pork, chorizo and steak.

ASIC revealed last week more than 130 Victorian businesses had plunged into liquidation or voluntary administration since the coronavirus crisis began.
