A man found walking through Preston allegedly told police he was going to a friend’s house to have a drink before giving them his brother’s name.

But it wasn’t long before police discovered Corey Hore’s true identity, realising he was wanted for a series of thefts on top of breaching Melbourne’s lockdown laws.

He fronted Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 30, to apply for bail after police chased him down on Highview St, Preston earlier in the day.

Leading Senior Constable Andrew Williams said when patrolling police asked Hore why he was out he said he was walking to his friend’s house to get some money and have a drink.

He allegedly then gave them his brother’s name, before running away when police discovered who he really was.

Hore had allegedly stolen a $66 bottle of whisky from Dan Murphy’s Preston a fortnight earlier on July 16.

The court heard he had also allegedly stolen $67 of wine from BWS on Murray Rd, Preston, on June 5 by putting the two bottles down his pants, and a $38 bottle of liquor from another Preston BWS on May 24

The unemployed Reservoir man allegedly had cannabis in his pocket when he was arrested.

Leading Senior Constable Williams said he was also yet to face court over a number of incidents, including assaulting emergency service workers, stealing alcohol from various bottle shops, stealing from Chemist Warehouse and breaking into a Heidelberg West property.

Hore’s lawyer told the court his client was a vulnerable adult who had schizophrenia and a cognitive impairment.

The court heard he’d only been released from a four-month stint in jail at the end of April.

Hore’s lawyer said while it was repetitive, Hore’s offending was not serious, and he could spend a long time waiting in custody for his cases to resolve due to the delays imposed by COVID-19.

Leading Senior Constable Williams said the risk of Hore offending on bail was high, but agreed the sentence Hore could receive might not be as long as the wait time.

Magistrate Stephen Ballek said it was “a difficult situation”, granting Hore bail.

He banned Hore from attending the bottle shops he had allegedly stolen from.
