A popular eastern shopping centre has been forced to shut its doors to last minute Valentine’s Day after wild weather caused major power outages across the state.

Brandon Park Shopping Centre in Wheelers Hill came to a standstill on Wednesday with no power to operate the centre.

“Due to a power outage following this storm the centre is currently closed, we’ll advise once power is restored,” a social media post stated.

Brandon Park is home to more than 72 businesses, restaurants and cafes.

More than 280,000 Victorians were still without electricity on Wednesday as of 10.45am after storms caused the state’s largest power station to suffer an outage on Tuesday.

Storms in Melbourne uprooted trees, damaged houses, caused commuter chaos on multiple train lines while forcing classes to be cancelled at St Patrick’s Primary School and Monash University.
