A would-be burglar who broke into the Bendigo Golf Course clubrooms during a failed heist was brought undone by his distinctive limp, a court has heard.

Troy Cahoon, 48, was convicted and sentenced to a 12 month community corrections order after pleading guilty at Bendigo Magistrates’ Court to burglary and trespassing with intent to steal

The Strathfieldsaye man and an accomplice broke into the Bendigo Golf Course clubrooms on December 17, 2023 using an 8.5kg gas bottle to smash the glass door into the main bar function room off the top decking area.

The crims then snuck through the building and made their way to the golf pro shop, kicking a panel out of the bi-fold doors to gain entry.

Cahoon and his co-accused tried to steal from the cash register — but it was empty.

Cahoon was identified by police after he was captured on CCTV at the scene of the crime, recognisable by his distinctive limp, the court heard.

Cahoon was previously charged alongside the same accomplice over another 10 burglaries of local businesses in a crime tear across Bendigo between December 2023 and February 2024.

The men allegedly hit the Kennington Dental Clinic, Huntly Post Office, Kangaroo Flat Provincial Home Living, Anaconda, Coffee Club, Love Bug Kids, Shining Bright Hair Salon Washateria laundromat, Old Green Bean cafe, Malayan Orchid restaurant and residential properties.

However, those charges were withdrawn on a plea deal and he was only convicted of burglarising the Bendigo Golf Course.

He also pleaded guilty to possession of meth and GHB.
