A disturbing video has emerged of a group of teen thugs bashing two young men in a savage, unprovoked gang attack in Bendigo’s CBD.
It is understood the gang approached the two 28-year-old Bendigo men on Bull St and viciously assaulted them about 1.15am on Sunday.
The extent of the victims’ injuries are unconfirmed, but it is believed one suffered a fractured skull and the other may have internal injuries.
The teens then approached and assaulted a 32-year-old man at the intersection of Queen and Mitchell streets about 1.45am.
The third victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The teens fled the scene prior to police arriving and investigations remain ongoing.
It is understood Bendigo police are investigating about half-a-dozen persons of interest believed to have been involved in the attack.
No arrests have been made or charges laid as of writing.
The horrific incident has been slammed by Andrew Lethlean, the National Party candidate in the upcoming federal election.
“I was disgusted to see the footage of the attack on Saturday night,” he said.
“A local family is suffering and a young man is still in hospital after being assaulted by a group of thugs.
Mr Lethlean, who has owned and operated several night-life venues in Bendigo’s CBD said he had never seen an incident so bad in his 30 years of working in hospitality.
Mr Lethlean said the “hundreds” of Bendigo residents had expressed concern over crime in the community.
“People are scared in their own homes and parents are worried about their kids getting bashed when they go out. At the same time, business owners are sick of shoplifting and anti-social behaviour.”
“The amount of car thefts is also out of control.”
Mr Lethlean said he wanted “more police on the streets” and for the courts to “crackdown” on crime and anti-social behaviour.
“We all have a right to be safe in our homes and on our streets,” he said.
“We need to work together to combat the scourge of crimes which are undermining community safety and making locals worry about their families.
Bendigo Labor MP Lisa Chesters, Mr Lethlean’s opponent in the upcoming federal election, said the incident was a “Victoria Police and State government matter”.
“It is disingenuous for any Federal election candidate to politicise such a terrible incident to win a few votes,” she said.
“I hope the victim of this crime is receiving the support they need.
“Everyone has the right to feel safe in their community.”
Premier and member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan was contacted for comment.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
