A cosy Bendigo date-night spot could close its doors forever as the owners of a Bendigo laneway restaurant make a tragic announcement.

Sangria Spanish Tapas Bar owner Ann Maree Davis announced the bar would be firing up the paella pans for the last time on Saturday May 8.

After eight years in the Bendigo laneway, Ms Davis said she had to close the tapas bar following an illness in the family.

“It has been a difficult decision to make but … we need to shift our focus to provide necessary love and support on the home front,” Ms Davis said.

“Words cannot express the gratitude we have felt for the support of our loyal customers, staff, suppliers and industry colleagues over these years many of whom have become part of our familia.”

The Spanish restaurant opened in September 2013, with the family buying a farm north of Bendigo in 2016 so they could serve fresh, local farm-to-table produce to hungry Bendigo diners.

Ms Davis said the bar had been a place to of happy memories and special moments for many, with first dates, proposals, birthdays, engagements, weddings, christenings and family celebrations all occurring in her bar.

She encouraged customers to drop by and “say adios” before she gives up the business.

But the tapas story may not be over, with Ms Davis listing the business for sale.
