The young man who became the face of abuse against children in Australia’s prisons, sparking a royal commission, is accused of robbing a small town bottle-o with a knife.

Dylan James Dudley Voller will appear in Griffith Local Court on Friday to face allegations he used a knife to rob a Moama bottle shop in 2019.

Murray River district police said the 23-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday following a two-year investigation into the Perricoota Rd robbery on January 29, 2019.

Mr Voller was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon and shoplifting.

The then teen became the face of institutional abuse in the youth justice system in 2015, when footage old emerged of Mr Voller being slammed to a mattress on the floor by a prison guard and shackled to a chair and covered in a spit hood at Darwin’s Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

Pictures chronicling Voller’s treatment shocked Australia, leading to a NT Royal Commission into the detention and protection of children and calls for reforms to youth detention in Victoria.

NSW Police said Voller was remanded in custody and was due to appear in Griffith Local Court on Friday May 14.
