Police are investigating after a young man was allegedly assaulted at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the trouble-plagued facility shortly after 6.15pm on June 13 after reports emerged of a fight at the centre.

A Victoria Police spokesman said investigators had been told two male youths were observed fighting around 6pm that evening.

“One male was treated for what are believed to be minor injuries,” she said.

“Investigations remain ongoing.”

The injured man was taken to hospital in a stable condition by paramedics later that evening, according to an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman.

Last year it was revealed the centre was among the most hazardous workplaces in Australia, with workers sent to hospital after assaults by detainees at an average rate of almost one a month.

In August youth prison workers said they were prepared to walk out of the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre amid violent attacks and poor working conditions.

The Centre accommodates young men aged 15-20 years while on remand or sentenced Youth Justice Order in a mixture of low and high security residential units.
